Substance Profile
Tetrahydroharmine (THH) is a beta-carboline alkaloid and the most abundant active compound in Banisteriopsis caapi. It is a weak reversible MAO-A inhibitor but a potent serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI). This unique dual action contributes significantly to the empathogenic and mood-elevating character of ayahuasca. THH extends DMT's duration not only through MAO inhibition but also modulates the serotonergic system directly via serotonin reuptake.
