Substance Profile
Phencyclidine (PCP) is a dissociative anesthetic and the prototypical arylcyclohexylamine, first synthesized in 1926 and introduced as a surgical anesthetic (Sernyl) in the 1950s. It was withdrawn from human medicine due to unpredictable psychotomimetic side effects. PCP is a potent NMDA antagonist with additional dopaminergic activity distinguishing it from ketamine. In research, it served as the basis for the glutamate hypothesis of schizophrenia, as it can produce schizophrenia-like symptoms.
