Substance Profile
Norbaeocystin is a trace tryptamine found in psilocybin-containing mushrooms. It is the N-demethylated analog of baeocystin and serves as a substrate for tryptamine N-methyltransferase on the psilocybin biosynthesis pathway. It occurs in Psilocybe mushrooms in very small amounts compared to psilocybin. Its psychoactive potency is substantially lower than psilocybin or baeocystin. Norbaeocystin is pharmacologically significant as a biomarker for complete alkaloid profiling of Psilocybe samples and as a key intermediate in the tryptamine methylation pathway leading to psilocybin.
