Methoxetamine (MXE) is a synthetic arylcyclohexylamine and structural analog of ketamine. It was developed as a potentially safer alternative to ketamine, with longer duration and reportedly lower bladder toxicity. MXE shows stronger affinity at the NMDA receptor than ketamine and additionally acts as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, giving it a unique entactogenic quality. In preclinical models, it shows antidepressant properties similar to ketamine.
