Substance Profile
Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD-25) is a semi-synthetic ergoline derivative and one of the most potent known psychedelics, active at microgram doses. It was first synthesized in 1938 by Albert Hofmann at Sandoz in Basel and its psychoactive properties were discovered in 1943. LSD binds with high affinity to a wide range of serotonergic and dopaminergic receptors and is characterized by its exceptionally long duration of action of up to 12 hours. Current research is investigating LSD-assisted therapy for anxiety disorders, cluster headache, and alcohol dependence.
