Substance Profile
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical tree from Southeast Asia whose leaves contain the psychoactive alkaloids mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. At low doses it acts as a stimulant, and at high doses produces opioid-like analgesic and sedating effects. Mitragynine is an atypical opioid agonist that selectively activates the G-protein signaling pathway without strong beta-arrestin recruitment (biased agonism), theoretically providing a more favorable safety profile than classical opioids. Kratom is controversially used as self-medication for opioid withdrawal.
