Substance Profile
Ibotenic acid is a naturally occurring isoxazole derivative from Amanita mushrooms (A. muscaria, A. pantherina). It is a potent glutamate agonist and precursor to muscimol, into which it is converted by decarboxylation. Ibotenic acid itself acts primarily as an NMDA receptor agonist and is neurotoxic at high doses. In neuroscience, it is used as a lesioning tool for targeted brain lesions. The psychoactive effect is a mixture of glutamatergic excitation and GABAergic sedation through simultaneous muscimol formation.
