Ibogaine is a naturally occurring indole alkaloid from the root bark of the West African shrub Tabernanthe iboga. It possesses a unique, complex multi-target activity profile with activity at NMDA, opioid, serotonin, and nicotinic receptors. In the Bwiti tradition of Gabon, it has been used as a sacrament for centuries. Ibogaine has shown remarkable results in clinical studies for interrupting opioid dependence, rapidly alleviating withdrawal symptoms and reducing craving. Due to its cardiotoxicity (QT prolongation), its use requires strict medical supervision.
