Substance Profile
5-Methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT) is a potent tryptamine found naturally in various plants (Anadenanthera peregrina) and in the skin secretion of the Sonoran Desert toad (Incilius alvarius). It differs pharmacologically from N,N-DMT through its high affinity for the 5-HT1A receptor, producing a qualitatively different experience often described as 'non-dual'. The effects are extremely intense but brief (20-45 minutes when inhaled). Clinical studies are investigating 5-MeO-DMT as a rapid-acting therapeutic for depression and anxiety disorders.
